Valencia Facts

  • More than 6,500 students graduated in 2006-07, ranking Valencia 1st among the nation's 2-year institutions and 3rd among 4-year colleges and universities in the number of associate's degrees awarded.

  • Celebrating 40 years Valencia Community College was founded in 1967 as Valencia Junior College. It became Valencia Community College in 1971; its president is Sanford C. Shugart, PhD.

  • Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, it offers more than 46 pre-major associate in arts, 101 associate in science and applied science degrees and certificate programs, which lead to immediate entry into the workforce.

  • 84% of Valencia AA graduates who transferred to the Florida State University System in 2005-2006 continued their studies at the University of Central Florida.

  • Disney's Touchstone Pictures filmed part of the movie "Instinct" on Valencia's East Campus in the Student Services Building. Actors Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Donald Sutherland showed up to shoot several scenes in which the East Campus appears as a Miami medical university. Several graduates of Valencia's Film Program worked on the film as crew members.

  • Full-time tuition for an in-state student is nearly $2,000 per year; books cost almost $1,500 a year.

  • Valencia's library has about 183,000 volumes, 2,100 periodicals, 23,000 audio/visual materials, 18,700 E-books and over 120 E-Reference Sources/Services.

  • Valencia has 2,492 faculty and staff members and 32 administrators.

  • Almost 60 percent of Valencia students are women.

  • About 26% percent of Valencia's students are older than 25.

  • Over half of Valencia's credit students live in Orange County, 13 percent live in Osceola County and 8 percent live in Seminole County.

  • Valencia Foundation received approximately $7.3 million in gifts and pledges plus another $2.1 million in public matching funds in 2006-2007.

  • Valencia Foundation's board comprises 54 community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to support scholarships, faculty chairs and learning programs.

  • Richard McCree leads the foundation board as chairman, with the able assistance of Helen Von Dolteren-Founier, vice chair, Jess Bailes, secretary.
  • Four campuses, including West on South Kirkman Road ; Osceola in Kissimmee ; East , near UCF; and Winter Park, yield an annual enrollment of over 42,000 full- and part-time students, making Valencia the 3rd largest of Florida 's 28 community colleges

  • Community colleges are the fastest-growing mode of higher education, serving nearly half of all first-time freshmen and nearly half of all college and university undergraduates.
